After the disappointment of 1980, the Bucs won their second division title in three years with a thrilling winner-takes-all success in Detroit on the final day of the season. They got hammered by the Cowboys when they got to the post-season but John McKay's defense had done it when it counted and the Doug Williams-led offense was a ton better than the 1981 division-title winning version. This was the start of the losing streak in Tampa, the first of 14 straight losing seasons and 13 in which they would lose 10 or more. Doug Williams had bolted for the USFL and fans began deserting Tampa Stadium in droves. The 1983 team was better than 2-14 but kicking and injuries woes doomed the team to the worst record in the NFL for the third time in franchise history.
