The defensive tackles feature one unanimous selection but then a whole bunch of other deserving candidates with multiple Pro Bowls between them. Leaving out the two honorable mentions was really tough but the quality of the starters and back-ups at this position is unquestionable. Going back to the early days to recognise Dave Pear is totally justified as well. STARTER - DT WARREN SAPP There is no doubt whatsoever about Warren’s place on the roster. One of the most inspirational players in franchise history, a real game-changer on the field and the leader of the defense that won the Super Bowl. He played nine seasons with the Buccaneers, is in the Ring of Honor and a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. STARTER - DT GERALD McCOY Often maligned by Buccaneer fans but his place as a starter alongside Sapp is well-deserved. Made six straight Pro Bowls during the time when the franchise was struggling which makes you realise how highly he was regarded by his peers around the NFL. Ranks fourth all-time in sacks with 54 for the Bucs and second only to Sapp amongst defensive tackles. BACK-UP - DT DAVE PEAR A member of the expansion Bucs and the first Pro Bowler in franchise history with his selection in 1978. As the Buccaneer defense grew around him, he was the veteran experience in the middle of the line. BACK-UP - DT VITA VEA From the heart of the defense in the first year of Buccaneer football to the man at the heart of the current defense. A first round pick in 2018 and a multiple Pro Bowler since then. HONORABLE MENTIONS There are two really excellent players from Buccaneer history who miss out because of the quality ahead of them. David Logan was a 12th round pick in 1979 who started over 100 games at nose tackle and racked up almost 40 sacks in the process. He went on to become Gene’s sidekick on Buc radio before passing away at an early age in 1999. This was the same year that Anthony McFarland was drafted and he also played eight seasons in a Buccaneer uniform before being traded to the Colts. He was often over-shadowed by Warren Sapp next to him and missed the Super Bowl win because of injury.
