Cornerback was an interesting position to choose as outside of one obvious starter, there were several deserving candidates for the other starter spot and the two back-ups. So a pair of very honorable mentions that had the most obvious “not a chance of being chosen” players who were first round busts. STARTER - CB - RONDE BARBER 16 seasons as a Buccaneer, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame, the most games played and starts in franchise history. Was a 3rd round pick in 1997 and had a terrible rookie season just proving that perseverance can deliver. Had the most famous play in Tampa Bay annals with his interception return in the 2002 NFC Championship Game that sent the Bucs to their first Super Bowl. STARTER - CB - RICKY REYNOLDS A high 2nd round pick in 1987 who played seven seasons with the Buccaneers but toiled amongst some of the worst overall defenses. His play at corner was stellar at times and started over 100 games in a Tampa Bay uniform. BACK-UP - CB - MIKE WASHINGTON An anchor of the great early Tampa Bay defenses having arrived in a pre-1976 trade with the Baltimore Colts. He started almost 100 games and recorded 28 interceptions in a Buccaneer uniform. Famously had the game-ending interception in the 1982 Monday Night win over Miami that made me a Tampa fan and led to this site and so much more. BACK-UP - CB - DONNIE ABRAHAM Became a starter as a rookie in 1996 and had six really good seasons occupying one corner spot on some great Buccaneer defenses and only moved on in a salary cap move before the Super Bowl season. Had 31 interceptions in those six seasons. recording five or more in all but one of them. HONORABLE MENTIONS Both Brian Kelly and Aqib Talib were close to making the back-up spots. Kelly started every game in only three of his 10 seasons but was a very good compliment to Barber having arrived in Tampa as a 2nd round pick in 1998. Talib had so much ability on the field but was an absolute liability in the locker room which led to him being traded to New England half way through his fifth Buc season.
