The 2013 Buccaneer draft review
Summing up 2013 - Below Average
The trade for Revis looked good at the time but a first round pick for a one season rental became terrible in hindsight. The rest of the selections were OK but no real hits anywhere in the draft.

The Bucs picked from 15th through 11th in each round starting with the 13th pick in the first round. The first round pick was traded to the NY Jets for Darrelle Revis. The Bucs sent 4th and 6th round picks to Oakland to move up in the 4th round. The Bucs obtained a 4th round pick from New England for Aqib Talib. The Bucs sent 6th and 7th round picks to Minnesota to move up in the 6th round.

1 - traded to the New York Jets for CB Darrelle Revis - Bad Trade
When you give up a first round pick for one of the top players in the NFL, then it is seen as an aggressive move to progress in the standings. When you then release said player after one year having seen no reduction in his skills but simply because he does not now fit your defensive scheme, then it is seen as a disaster. Which it was.

2 - CB - Johnthan Banks - Mississippi State - OK pick
Started for two seasons looking promising as a rookie and then lost of his way and his position on the team by 2015. Was released after five games in 2016.

3 - QB - Mike Glennon - North Carolina State - Good pick
Became a starter as a rookie and did a reasonable enough job in the role before returning to a back-up role in his second season and then a clipboard holder in his final two seasons with the Bucs. Signed a big money free agent deal with the Bears which turned out to be a disaster for them.

4 - DT - Akeem Spence - Illinois - Good pick
Spent four seasons as a key member of the defensive line rotation and made four starts in 2016 when Clinton McDonald was hurt. Was a starter during his rookie season but moved into a back-up role in 2014. Signed a free agent contract with Detroit in March 2017 and the chance to become a regular NFL starter.

4 - DE - William Gholston - Michigan State - Good pick
Relegated to a back-up role for most of 2018 but did make two starts at defensive tackle early in the year. Had been a fairly regular starter at defensive end for the previous four seasons but offers little in the way of pass rush skills failing to record even a single sack in 2017. His cousin is Vernon Gholston, a 2008 1st round pick of the New York Jets.

5 - DE - Steven Means - Buffalo - OK pick
Made the full roster out of training camp in 2013 and played in 10 games as a back-up on the defensive line and was a gameday inactive on the other six. Played in the 2014 season opener against the Panthers but was then released the following day. Wound up on Baltimore's practice squad later in the 2014 season.

6 - RB - Mike James - Miami - Good pick
Become the starting back in Week 7 of his rookie season when Doug Martin was placed on IR and had a monster 158-yard game in Seattle but was then lost for the season himself early in the Monday Night victory over the Dolphins. Threw a TD pass in the Seahawks game on a trick play. Was nothing more than a back-up for his remaining seasons with the Bucs.
