A 66-yard half-back option
Louis Carter v L.A.Rams
The Coliseum, 5 Nov 1978

The background

After going 2-26 in their first two seasons, the 1978 Bucs were 4-5 and really surprising a lot of people around the NFL. But this was the game where Doug Williams had his jaw broken by Fred Dryer and left the offense in the hands of former Raider Mike Rae. But he did have Louis Carter in the backfield, the man who actually threw the first TD in Buc history and a man who had the ability to complete an inordinate number of running back option passes.

The game situation
The Bucs were trailing 10-3 with four minutes left in the 2nd quarter and faced 3rd and 12 from their own 32. Mike Rae pitched left to Louis Carter who just threw deep down the left sideline. Streaking underneath it was WR Morris Owens who should have scored had he not put his foot out of bounds at the two. And then the old Bucs kicked in with penalties and a missed Neil O'Donoghue fieldgoal meaning that Carter's heroics produced no points.
