Lee McGriff
So close to the first TD
The Houston Astrodome
12 September 1976

The background
The day it all began for the Tampa Bay NFL franchise, on the road in the Astrodome. The Bucs would of course go on to finish their expansion season 0-14 and by the end of the year, the losses were big and not pretty, but at the outset, there was fresh optimism and hope amongst the players, coaches and fans.

The Bucs had Florida legend Steve Spurrier at QB and a combination of former USC players following John McKay into the NFL, and former Gators all over their roster. Another of these was WR Lee McGriff who came so close to making franchise history for all the right reasons.

The game situation
With just over three minutes left in the first half, the Bucs were at the Houston 12-yard line. A holding penalty moved them back and then Spurrier rolled right and threw for McGriff in the endzone. It would have been a great catch but it was not to be and the Bucs went on to be shut out 20-0.
