Montana breaks our heart
Tampa Stadium
17 September 1989

The background
These were the San Francisco 49ers of the glory years, the Bill Walsh and Joe Montana days. And here were the young upstart Buccaneers, a 5-11 team taking on the Super Bowl champions, and having the temerity to lead late in the game.

Vinny Testaverde had hit Mark Carrier on an 18-yard pass play to give the Bucs a 16-13 lead with three minutes left in the game. And in the pre-internet days, Mick Luckhurst gave this out as the final score on Channel 4's live coverage that Sunday night in the UK. But he had reckoned without Joe Montana at the control of the Niner offense.

The game situation
The 49ers had driven from their own 30-yard line and had the ball at the Buc 4-yard line. Montana rolled right, faked to pass and then ran the ball in himseld to secure a narrow victory. And every Buc fan was left to consider what might have been for their young team.
