| The Cardiac Kids Tampa Stadium 2 January 1983 The background The 1982 season was interrupted by a players' strike that caused a long disruption to the season and resulted in a 16-team playoff tournament to decide the post-season contestants. The Bucs had started the season 0-3 but found themselves on a winning streak and at 4-4 entering their final game of the season, a home encounter with the Chicago Bears. And it was a winner takes all battle, with the loser missing out on the post-season action. And the Bucs were 23-6 down midway through the third quarter and it was looking bad. Then Doug Williams twice hit Jimmie Giles wth TD passes and a Bill Capece fieldgoal inside the final minute took the game into sudden death overtime. The game situation The Bucs had forced the Bears to punt and Tampa had the ball 1st and 10 at their own 40-yard line. John McKay called "18 EAT Pitch" and James Wilder ran the Bucs into the playoffs again. Click here for the game reports & stats |
