John Lynch's fake punt
Houlihan's Stadium
22 September 1996

The background
The 1996 season was Tony Dungy's first as head coach of the Buccaneers but the season started as badly as all the others from the previous decade with the Bucs at 0-5 and 1-8.

But during the fourth game of that season, the Bucs did manage to pull off a trick play and one that technically leaves John Lynch with the highest average per carry in franchise history.

It didn't help the Bucs garner Tony Dungy's first win as a head coach however, They led 13-3 with three minutes to go but allowed two late touchdowns to Rick Mirer and the Seahawks and fell to 0-4 in front of a sparse crowd in Tampa.

The game situation
The score was tied 3-3 in the 2nd quarter when the Bucs were lined up to punt. John Lynch was the up-back and took a direct snap and went 40 yards before being brought down by future Buccaneer Joey Galloway who was back to return the punt.
