Blocking Mick's fieldgoal
Tampa Stadium
6 December 1981

The background
The 1981 season saw the Bucs eventually clinch their second NFC Central Division title with a dramatic win over the Detroit Lions in the season finale (which will appear later in this countdown).

But three weeks before, the Bucs played one of the most exciting games in their franchise history in front of a packed crowd at Tampa Stadium and a game that went right down to the wire.

And it had added effect for British fans because kicking for the Falcons that day was a rookie from Cal-Berkeley named Mick Luckhurst. More well known for his Channel 4 work after he retired, Mick has long been a friend and supporter of the Bucs UK fan club but we have to include this play because it caused him to give the Bucs a win.

The game situation
The Bucs led 24-23 with Mick lined up to attempt a potential game-winning 45-yard fieldgoal. Little used defensive lineman Scott Hutchinson got a hand to the kick and deflected it wide to give John McKay a crucial victory.
