Oh those crazy 1986 Bucs
Soldier Field
7 December 1986

The background
The 1986 Bucs were probably the worst team in franchise history, yes even worse than the expansion team. Leeman Bennett was a terrible coach and by the end of his second season, he had given up, the players had given up and the Bucs were being beaten by 25-30 points a game.

And then they went into Soldier Field to play the Super Bowl champion Bears and got totally annihilated. But they did manage to produce a wacky blooper style play that deserves its place this high in our countdown because I don't think you will ever see a play like it again.

The game situation
It was the first play of the 4th quarter and the Bears were clinging to their narrow 42-0 lead. Steve Young threw a pass that was picked off and after a couple of laterals as the Bear defenders tried to decide who was going to score their next touchdown, Vince Heflin nipped in to pick the ball out of the air and return it for a score.

Whereas the top 20-30 plays do stand out and are able to be ranked subjectively (and have been by some of the Tampa media), the early plays are generally spread out across the years and can only be placed approximately in terms of their importance.
