Bert Emanuel's "catch"
The Trans World Dome
23 January 2000

The background
Another heart-breaking moment from the 1999 NFC Championship Game in St.Louis. The moment when it looked like Bert Emanuel had finally made a key reception for the Bucs and they would have four shots at the endzone to try and snatch an unlikely victory over the Rams.

But the play was ruled incomplete on video replay. According to the NFL rules at the time, it was not a catch as Bert let the ball hit the ground after he gained possession. Now it would be a catch.

And of course this didn't stop a few morons starting conspiracy theory threads on message boards in the days afterwards.

The game situation
The Bucs were trailing 11-6 and at the Ram 35 yard line facing 2nd and 23. Shaun King hit Emanuel on a crossing pattern to the Ram 22 but it was ruled incomplete after a video challenge. One Hail Mary pass later out of the endzone and the Rams were in the Super Bowl.
