| The most unlikely kicker The Silverdome 18 December 1983 The background The 1983 Bucs had terrible kicking problems and after a debacle on Monday Night against the Packers, coach John McKay decided that "Capece was kaput" and signed Dave Warnke to replace Bill Capece for the season finale in Detroit. Warnke was the worst kicker in NFL history and nearly hit a corner pylon on a PAT attempt. So McKay went down the sideline asking who could kick. Offensive lineman George Yarno offered and hence became the first left-footed 280-pound tackle to boot a PAT for the Bucs. And probably the last too. The game situation The Bucs had just scored on a Jack Thompson to Gerald Carter 13-yard TD pass and John McKay sent Yarno out to attempt the PAT. He made it and the offensive line went wild in celebration. Click here for all the game details |
