Warren Sapp TD reception
at the Superdome
7 December 2003

The background

The Bucs had been using Warren Sapp as a tight end since the 2002 season and he was in the game for the first touchdown in the Super Bowl lined up on the left hand side as an eligible receiver.

Jon Gruden had put a play into the offensive system that made Sapp a receiving target and he caught a pass in the season opener against the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Now every Buc fan was waiting for the time when the play would be called in the red zone and if Warren would actually score a touchdown on offense.

The game situation
Late in the second quarter with the score tied at 7-7, David Gibson blocked Mitch Berger's punt and Ronde Barber recovered, returning the ball down to the New Orleans' one-yard line in the process. And with 17 seconds left in the half, the one-yard, one-play scoring drive was completed when QB Brad Johnson hit Sapp in the right half of the endzone for a memorable touchdown.
