The No.30 shirt
No, it's not a misprint, the first Buc to wear No.30 was a linebacker. 1976 was before the time of the NFL's restrictions on player numbers, so Jimmy Gunn got to wear that number for the expansion Buccaneers.

He was followed in that respect by a series of no-names although David Greenwood did start the 1985 season at strong safety having previously played an 18-game USFL season earlier that year. Vernon Turner will always be remembered as being the first-ever Buccaneer to return a punt for a touchdown.

Mark Robinson came to the Bucs in a trade in 1988 and immediately added veteran leadership and savvy to the defensive backfield. He started all 40 games he appeared in for Tampa and only injury ended his time as leader of the Buc secondary.

Charlie Garner might once have been known as "I.O." by Jon Gruden for "Instant Offense" but was more of an injury disappointment in 2004 for the Bucs. History has told us those would be his three appearances that year were his only ones in the No.30 for the Buccaneers.

One 30 owner, Donte Nicholson, was re-signed during each of three seasons when injuries hit the roster but did allow Zack Crockett to have a brief sojourn in the number during the 2007 season. Bradley McDougald switched from the 49 to the 30 jersey in 2014 and returned it to a starting role later in that season.
