Despite Pro Bowl replacements, Bucs blanked
How low can you go? A total of 57 players have been named to the NFC team for the 2010 Pro Bowl, including replacements for injuries and Super Bowl participants. Seven were added Monday to fill in for members of the Super Bowl-bound New Orleans Saints.
Still, not a single Tampa Bay Buccaneer is among those selected for the game, taking place Sunday in Miami as the NFL breaks from its tradition of playing the game in Hawaii a week after the Super Bowl.
Perhaps that it is an accurate measure of the talent on the Bucs, who had to win two of their last three games just to finish 3-13, but the timing of this year's Pro Bowl has opened up more slots than usual from players who won't participate. In the NFC, the Atlanta Falcons also were blanked from Pro Bowl consideration despite going 9-7 this season, as were the hapless Detroit Lions and the Seattle Seahawks.
But Nick Collins (Green Bay safety) is a Pro Bowler. Former USF standout Mike Jenkins (Dallas cornerback) is, too. Chicago Bears rookie Johnny Knox got a nod as a replacement return specialist, a spot occupied by Tampa Bay's Clifton Smith last year. Even the St. Louis Rams had one pick, although running back Steven Jackson won't play because of injury.
Among the Bucs passed over were cornerback Aqib Talib, drafted ahead of Jenkins in the 2008 draft, tight end Kellen Winslow, who set a team record for catches by a tight end, and cornerback Ronde Barber, who made the team as a replacement last year.
