Olson wants Freeman to improve accuracy
With the exception of Mark Sanchez of the Jets, every quarterback in the playoffs this year completed at least 60 percent of his passes during the regular season. That's the kind of performance Bucs offensive coordinator Greg Olson wants from Josh Freeman.
Freeman completed 54.5 percent of his passes while playing in 10 games. While that mark was better than those posted by the two quarterbacks drafted ahead of him, Olson said it isn't good enough. "That (60-percent range) is where we want him to be," Olson said Monday during a break at the Senior Bowl workouts. "You look at the playoff quarterbacks, and that's where it's at."
Of course, it's not just accuracy that Olson wants Freeman to work on this offseason. Fundamentals, ball protection and his relationship with his receivers are other areas where Freeman needs to improve, Olson said. But all of that is aimed primarily at making Freeman, who completed 59 percent of his passes during his college career at Kansas State University, a more accurate passer.
"The game's a lot faster here and you have to be quicker and so he has to get up to speed with that, but it doesn't do you any good to get the ball out of your hand quicker if you're not accurate," Olson said. "There's that fine line there between the timing and all that, and the two have to work together. The whole process of the drop and the delivery has to be faster, but you have to be accurate or it doesn't work."
Olson and the Bucs are still in the process of putting together an offseaon program for Freeman, whose performance season continues to amaze Olson every time he watches it on tape. "He knows he can play a lot better, but to come in and do what he was able to do with no practice was phenomenal," Olson said of Freeman, who was 3-6 as a starter for the Bucs last year.
"He didn't have what Sanchez had or what (Falcons QB Matt) Ryan had last year. Those guys were the guys right from the start. But this guy (Freeman), he was more like an afterthought. That's why I'm so excite#d about him."
