Freeman confused but confident
Josh Freeman is coming off what his coach, Raheem Morris, described as his worst overall performance. Freeman threw three interceptions and had a season-low passer rating of 12.1 in the 26-3 loss to the New York Jets. The main reason, Freeman said Wednesday, was the Jets' defense.
"The whole the day, the defense had me confused,'' said Freeman, who has lost five straight since winning his first career start. "There's really not a whole lot more to it. Whether it was on points, what pressure they were going to bring, what protections (I needed to get into). I have to do a better job of figuring that stuff out.''
The Bucs' coaches don't disagree, and their plan to help Freeman is to scale back the offense a bit. Still, what the fans see Sunday probably won't look a whole lot different. Freeman said the plan likely calls for the Bucs to spend more time this week working on plays they already know rather than installing plays they sometimes don't even run in the game.
"I think what (Morris) is saying is, the game plans have been pretty big,'' Freeman said. "And we spend a lot time trying to figure out certain plans and getting to know them well, and then we don't even call it in a game. So, maybe we'll be cutting back on that a little bit.''
It's obvious something needs to be done. The offense piled up yardage two weeks ago, but struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities in a loss at Carolina. Last week, Tampa Bay struggled just to create scoring opportunities. Freeman has thrown eight interceptions the past two games but said he remains confident. I wouldn't say my confidence is shaken,'' he said. "I'm just disappointed in myself.''
