Invincible
This film came out in 2005 and is the true story of former Philadelphia Eagles' special teamer Vince Papale. It is made by Disney Studios so you know it is going to be a feel good story with no swearing or anything risque and you know there is going to a lovely happy ending at the end.

But the film is made well enough that you really do not care and you find yourself rooting for Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg, all the way through the film right to the final scene.

Papale was a regular guy from South Philly who attended an open try-out for the Eagles in 1976 staged by then-rookie head coach Dick Vermiel (played superbly by Greg Kinnear). Against all the odds, he made it to training camp and then through the final 45-man roster as a special teams' head hunter.

Papale went on to play three years in the NFL in that role and became a hero to the working classes in Philadelphia, especially as he was 30 years old when he first made the team.

The special features on the film shows interviews with Papale now, as well as the producer, director and the talented Wahlberg.

The football sequences are believable and one hit on Wahlberg was actually mis-timed by the real player in question and knocked the actor well on to the sideline making for some great footage.

In short, this is one film that is worth having in your collection simply for the feel-good factor that it brings, and that it is based on a true story with not too much in the way of liberties being taken with the actual events that transpired.

Buccaneer Connections
Pat O'Hara was the Assistant Football Coach on the making of the film. O'Hara was the Bucs' 10th round draft pick in 1991 and played that season with Tampa Bay before going on to a career in the Arena League. He also played back-up QB Tyler Cherubini in Any Given Sunday.

The first actual game film shown in the film is the Eagles' 1975 season finale against the Bengals. The Philadelphia QB is Mike Boryla who played for the Buccaneers in 1977.

Papale only had one actual reception in his NFL career and it came in the 1977 season opener against the Buccaneers. He also recorded the first special teams' tackle in that game too.
