Weldon returns to coach Eagles
Casey Weldon has made the transition from successful athlete to successful businessman. He now wants to see if he can be a successful coach, too. Weldon, 37, a hometown hero at North Florida Christian and Florida State and a former quarterback in the NFL, was introduced as NFC's football coach this week.
Aside from directing his annual summer camp for quarterbacks - former players include current FSU starter Drew Weatherford - this marks Weldon's first coaching venture at any level. Weldon said he's thrilled to be returning to Tallahassee and to NFC, crediting the school for shaping him personally, spiritually and athletically.
''There's nothing these kids are going to go through that I haven't gone through,'' Weldon said and smiled. ''I've been injured. I've rehabbed. I've been cut. I've been told I was as bad as you get and was released from a team. I love North Florida Christian and always have. It changed my life and I hope to do that for a bunch of kids here and I am excited to be back.''
Weldon replaces Pete Walker, who led the Eagles to the Region2-1A finals last year but resigned after one season to be closer to family in South Florida.
Also, Will Holley, 29, who was the head coach at Graceville the past two years and led the Tigers to the Class1B title game this season, was introduced as the Eagles' defensive coordinator.
Weldon will juggle his duties in business and football. He will remain employed as vice president for business development for All-State Construction, which is based in Tallahassee and operated by his father. Weldon has resided in Tampa for the past decade. Holley, meanwhile, will join NFC on March 6. He will teach physical education and be in charge of the team's daily schedule until Weldon arrives each afternoon.
Holley's Tigers fell in the Class1B title game to Lakeland Evangel Christian, which is coached by Dedrick Dodge, a former teammate of Weldon's at FSU. Holley also was a student assistant at Florida under Steve Spurrier, winning a national title in 1996. Holley thinks the arrangement will work fine. ''Just the opportunity to work at a place like NFC and work for a guy like Casey,'' Holley said. ''It was tough to turn down.''
North Florida Baptist Church Pastor Randy Ray was ecstatic to attract both Weldon and Holley to NFC. ''It's kind of like having the best of both worlds,'' Ray said. ''How can you ask for anything better than a guy that's had the success of a Casey Weldon? How can you ask for anything brighter than the success of a Will Holley after two years in a (Graceville) program, taking it to state championship game?''
Weldon was the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner and runner-up for the Heisman Trophy during his senior season at FSU in 1991. A a fourth-round selection of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1992, Weldon also played for the Barcelona Dragons of the World Football League (1995), the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1993-97), the San Diego Chargers (1997-98) and the Washington Redskins (1999-00). Weldon's wife, Lori, also is a 1987 graduate of NFC. The Weldons have four children - Kendall, 16; Alexis, 12; Brooke, 10; Cade, 7.
