Dunn Is Back, But What About His Game?
One of the good guys is back. Warrick Dunn is a Buccaneer again. I can just see him giving away more homes for the holidays ... and Antonio Bryant taking drug tests under the mistletoe. That's life in Jon Gruden team building. Good news and bad news.
Dunn's signing won't change the balance of power in the NFC South, no more than the signings of Bryant, Brian Griese, Jeff Faine or Ben Troupe. No, it's never a bad day when Warrick Dunn returns to your community. What a human, what a competitor. We just don't know how much of his game is coming back with him. Anything from him would help.
When Gruden arrived in 2002, he couldn't stop talking about Dunn, who'd left for Atlanta and 1,000-yard seasons. "We lost Warrick Dunn, OK?" Gruden said just about every time his offense was awful.
He wasn't wrong about Dunn.
The man has run for more than 10,000 yards in his NFL career. He remained a popular Bucs player even when he wasn't a Bucs player. He remains popular in Atlanta even after being cut by the Falcons to make room for Michael Turner. Warrick DeMon Dunn returns to Tampa with something to prove. Bringing him back is a nice thing. It would be nicer if this was two years ago.
We know his heart will never run dry. But he's 33, making him one of the older NFL running backs, and 33 is old when your job is running through keyholes and around giants. He's certainly not the bridge back to Cadillac Williams, because of his age - and because there might not be any Cadillac. Caddy might never come back, at least in rookie condition. It's time to start accepting that. You won't find a better person than Warrick Dunn.
All you need to know about Antonio Bryant is that when Tampa Tribune editors went to find a photo of the troubled wide receiver, the first one that popped up on the computer screen was Bryant's booking mug from the Sam Mateo County, Calif., Sheriff's Office. Yowza.
Gruden and Bruce "Bruce" Allen remain pathologically committed to diamonds in the garbage. They're gambling again. Bryant's numbers were pretty good before the NFL kicked him out of the league for being himself, complete with failed drug test. The good news is that Bryant is 5 inches shorter than Jerramy Stevens, so there's less of him. Anybody Have A Time Machine?
The Bucs have been underachievers this offseason. Think of all those years Gruden was anxious to get out of the financial hole dug by his favorite pinata, Rich McKay. Well, the chains were off this time, and Gruden wasn't exactly Hercules gone to market. This team has addressed shortcomings in second-rate fashion, given how the Glazers raised ticket prices, unless Ben Troupe instead of Alge Crumpler is a reason for a parade. Warrick Dunn starring in Old Home Week isn't enough either.
But never underestimate Warrick Dunn. Too many did that when he first came into the league, Tony Dungy included. And 10,000 yards later ... How bad a day can it be when you get an NFL Man of the Year back? Our community just became richer again. We're just not sure how much it'll help with the football. A good man is back and Antonio Bryant is a Buc, too. Anybody out there wish Warrick Dunn was 27 and Antonio Bryant was 33 instead of the other way around?
