RISE AND WALK - Dennis Byrd
An autobiography published in 1992.

The BUCPOWER.COM review
The scene was the Meadowlands, an unmemorable game between the Jets and the Chiefs. Kansas City QB Dave Krieg dropped back to pass, the ball went downfield and a Jet defensive end was left immobile on the field.

Dennis Byrd's amazing recovery from a broken neck, the long weeks of therapy and recouperation, and the incredible site of him slowly walking into a press conference four months later, is one that will be appreciated by any NFL fan.

This book has been made into a "made-for-TV" film which has been on Channel 5 in recent months, but the book is far better. Byrd and his family put a lot of trust in their faith but do so without going over the top about its role in his recovery.

Other reviews
Byrd, a defensive lineman for the New York Jets, was paralyzed from the neck down in a collision during a game in November 1992. This book provides a full autobiographical treatment of the 27-year-old Byrd, but its essence is a graphic, arresting description of the physical and emotional devastation he experienced from the moment of impact to the present time.

The strenuous work undertaken during his recovery is detailed, as are Byrd's spiritual reflections. In a matter of months, Byrd defied all predictions and reasonable hopes and began walking again. He relates the role played by his wife, family, friends, doctors, therapists, and the general public; a combination of "medicine and miracles, of divine love and human faith and, yes, of endless hours of sweat, and pain and tears."

This is a very moving and inspirational title that will be of interest primarily to school and public libraries. Library Journal
