OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - JEFF GARCIA
This turned out to be the closest of all the awards that we ran for the 2007 season. A neck and neck battle between quarterback and running back.
But in the end, taking 48% of the votes, Jeff Garcia became only the third quarterback after Brad Johnson and Craig Erickson, to be awarded our Offensive Player of the Year honour. Having signed as a free agent back in March, Garcia started 13 games and threw only four interceptions in the entire regular season, three of which came in one game. The Bucs were 8-5 in the games he started.
Earnest Graham came from nowhere to rush for nearly 1,000 yards after injuries decimated the Buccaneer backfield. He received 44% of the votes cast for his efforts in starting for the first time in the NFL and carrying the Tampa Bay rushing attack on his broad shoulders.
Last year's winner, Joey Galloway, took a fair few votes to finish in third place, with one single vote being cast for Micheal Spurlock. I can see how you would vote for him in Special Teams' Player of the Year (and believe me, many of you did!), but offense? He only played 17 downs in all at receiver and that was in the final two games when everyone else was being rested.
