The 2013 Buccaneer draft review
Summing up 2013
Way too early to pass judgement on this draft class so far but Glennon was the starting QB for most of the season and both Banks and Spence started all but three game between them. Each of the six players made the roster and only Means did not have a real impact at some point in the year. But trading your first round pick for a player who is gone after only one season is another disaster for the long-term success of the franchise.

The Bucs picked from 15th through 11th in each round starting with the 13th pick in the first round. The first round pick was traded to the NY Jets for Darrelle Revis. The Bucs sent 4th and 6th round picks to Oakland to move up in the 4th round. The Bucs obtained a 4th round pick from New England for Aqib Talib. The Bucs sent 6th and 7th round picks to Minnesota to move up in the 6th round.

1 - traded to the New York Jets for CB Darrelle Revis - bad trade
When you give up a first round pick for one of the top players in the NFL, then it is seen as an aggressive move to progress in the standings. When you then release said player after one year having seen no reduction in his skills but simply because he does not now fit your defensive scheme, then it is seen as a disaster. Which it was.

2 - CB - Johnthan Banks - Mississippi State
Has become a solid and dependable starter at cornerback in his first two NFL seasons. Started 14 games in his second season missing only one through a run formation and was inactive through injury for the Baltimore game. Led the Bucs in interceptions and had a touchdown return in the win over Washington. Had an excellent rookie season and ranked 2nd on the team in interceptions and proved adept in pass coverage in spite of being tested more than most corners simply from playing opposite Darrelle Revis. Was regarded as one of the top cornerbacks in the 2013 draft and the Bucs' top selection having traded away their 1st round pick. Started 45 games in four seasons at Mississippi State and had 16 interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns. Was the winner of the 2012 Jim Thorpe Award for the best college defensive back.

3 - QB - Mike Glennon - North Carolina State
Lost his starting job to Josh McCown before the season even started but was promoted to the role again in Week 4 when McCown was injured and led the Bucs to their first win of the season in Pittsburgh. After four further starts, returned to the bench when McCown was fit again and never saw the field for the rest of the 2014 season. Former 3rd round pick who was thrust into starting action as a rookie with the release of Josh Freeman three weeks into the season and started every game from then on earning consensus All-Rookie honours and setting franchise passing records for a first-year quarterback. Had started 26 games in college and passed for over 4,000 yards and 31 touchdowns in the 2012 season

4 - DT - Akeem Spence - Illinois
Began 2014 as the primary back-up at the two tackle positions but started the final five games of the year when injuries knocked out the starters. Recorded three sacks on the season and proved to be a good run stuffer in the middle too. 4th round pick who won a starting job in the 2013 pre-season and started all but two of the games in his rookie season in. Had started all 38 games he played in college before leaving as a junior to enter the NFL draft a year early.

4 - DE - William Gholston - Michigan State
Won the starting left end job coming out of training camp in 2014 and made nine starts there before being replaced by Jacquies Smith. Had seen more playing time as a rookie and started the final two games of the season. Had 1.5 sacks in the win over Buffalo. Was a 4th round pick who started 24 games in his college career for the Spartans with 10 sacks before declaring for the NFL draft a year early after his junior season. His cousin is Vernon Gholston, a 2008 1st round pick of the New York Jets.

5 - DE - Steven Means - Buffalo
Started 42 games during his college career recording 18.5 sacks. Made the full roster out of training camp in 2013 and played in 10 games as a back-up on the defensive line and was a gameday inactive on the other six. Played in the 2014 season opener against the Panthers but was then released the following day. Wound up on Baltimore's practice squad later in the 2014 season.

6 - RB - Mike James - Miami
Saw action in 10 games during 2014 but was very much the final member of the backfield playing only in specific situations and was a gameday inactive five times during 2014. Had become the starting back in Week 7 of 2013 when Doug Martin was placed on IR. Had a monster 158-yard game in Seattle but was then lost for the season himself early in the Monday Night victory over the Dolphins. Threw a TD pass in the Seahawks game on a trick play. Was a 6th round pick out of Miami who started all 12 games for the Hurricanes as a senior and rushed for 621 yards in 201
