David seals win with INT, celebration

Lavonte David sealed Sunday’s 23-19 win against the Falcons by intercepting a Matt Ryan pass intended for WR Julio Jones over the middle. Then the celebration began.

After David fell to the ground at the Atlanta 40-yard line, he raced toward the south end zone carrying the football to enjoy the moment with a few thousand of his closest friends.

“The whole stadium erupted when I caught that ball and I was so excited, I had to run over there and give everybody some love,’’ said David, who led all players with 11 tackles. “We got that takeaway we were looking for all day — and it couldn’t have come at a better time.’’

Right back at you
The victory was especially sweet for Bucs C Joe Hawley, who played his first five pro seasons with Atlanta before the Falcons allowed him to test free agency. “Getting a second win this year against a divisional opponent was very important for us today,’’ Hawley said.

“We’re turning this thing around here in Tampa and you can really feel the energy we’re building. Coming to work with something to play for every week is special. We knew there’s a huge difference between walking out of this stadium 6-6 rather than 5-7.’’

Many happy returns
With two offensive linemen reclaiming their starting jobs, the Bucs rolled up 25 first downs and 388 yards. RT Demar Dotson, who injured his knee in the first preseason game and was been limited to special teams blocking the past few weeks, played the entire way for injured Gosder Cherilus. Rookie RG Ali Marpet returned after missing three games with an ankle injury.

“It felt good to be back out there,’’ Dotson said, “but I was tired and I didn’t know if I was going to hold up. I knew I’d get another opportunity this year and it felt good to help out.’’

Nobody was more thankful than Dotson for Jameis Winston’s dazzling 20-yard run late in the game, because it was Dotson’s holding penalty on first down that wiped out a potential 28-yard run by Doug Martin and created an eventual third-and-19.

“I probably was a little sloppy on that play,’’ said Dotson, who was flagged for holding rookie OLB Vic Beasley. “I’m sure it was a good call, but Jameis came back with a big play.’’

Marpet said he struggled at times with his stamina and technique. “It was awesome to get back out there and contribute,’’ she second-round pick out of Hobart said. “It’s easy to be focused in every game at this point of the season, considering where we are in the standings.’’

Peaking too early?
Atlanta fans couldn’t help but think playoffs when the Falcons bolted to a 5-0 start under rookie coach Dan Quinn. But since that glorious getaway, hard times have arrived with a vengeance.

Sunday’s setback marked Atlanta’s sixth loss in seven games as the Falcons and Bucs chase an NFC wild-card spot. Four of those six defeats were by four points or fewer. Being swept by Tampa Bay could end up being a major factor in determining Atlanta’s postseason chances.

“The truth is right now we’re a .500 club and we’re playing like it,’’ Quinn said. “The fourth quarter begins for us and we’re going to be about finishing. We better recognize that right now.’’

Extra points
The Bucs are 5-1 this season when holding opponents to 20 points or fewer. Rookie CB Jude Adjei-Barimah injured his right elbow in the third quarter and did not return, with Johnthan Banks taking his place. William Gholston, who registered two of Tampa Bay’s three sacks, was shaken up late in the game and is going through the league’s concussion protocol.
