Not good enough
Even without LB Lavonte David, the Bucs defense stifled Chicago’s dangerous attack most of the afternoon. The Bears converted only four of 16 third downs, finishing with 204 total yards and 12 first downs. But the Bucs posted only one takeaway, a Jay Cutler fumble caused by Gerald McCoy and recovered by fellow DT Clinton McDonald at midfield.

“They were plus-3 on turnovers and when you do that, you win like 95.6 percent of the time,’’ Bucs DT Akeem Spence said. “We played a great game, holding them to about 200 yards. I’ll take that any day of the week, but I’ll also take three takeaways, like we had last week in Washington.’’

As the final seconds ticked off, Spence gazed up at the scoreboard and noticed NFC South rival Atlanta had fallen to 4-7 with a last-second loss to Cleveland.

“Man, that’s a big opportunity missed for us,’’ Spence said. “That’s a sick feeling, seeing the Falcons lost and knowing we could have picked up a game on them. If we could have kept up what we were doing in the first half, this team would be in a whole different place right now.’’

CB Alterraun Verner said Smith told the Bucs about a game he remembered when the opposing team won, despite gaining only 120 yards, because they won the turnover battle.

“They had four takeaways, we had one,’’ Verner said. “I’m not going to say we shut Chicago down, but our defensive line was getting pressure and we held our coverage. You see the improvement on this defense every week, but improvement’s not enough. You want wins.’’
