Onside kick catches Bucs by surprise

Through their first six games, the Redskins had been outscored 46-3 in the third quarter. Something had to change. So, after pulling within 24-14 early in the third quarter on Kirk Cousins’ 3-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Grant, Washington decided to gamble.

Instead of kicking off, Dustin Hopkins squibbed the ball to his right and, 14 yards later, Trenton Robinson fell on it at the Washington 49-yard line.

The first successful onside kick of the 2015 NFL season generated more momentum for the surging Redskins, who promptly mounted a seven-play touchdown drive, capped by another three-yard flip by Cousins to tight end Jordan Reed for one of his 11 receptions.

Reed added the game-winning scoring catch from 6 yards out with 24 seconds remaining. “It takes great execution by your kicker, but also by your coverage team,’’ said Cousins, who completed 33 of 40 passes for 317 yards.

”Great job by our special teams coaches to scout them all week long. It turned out to be a very pivotal play in the game.’’

The Bucs, who never raced toward the ball, appeared unprepared for the kick, leaving Lovie Smith to assess the damage. “Onside kick, of course, hurt us,’’ Smith said.
