Garcia's Leadership, Patience Key To Win

Jeff Garcia's patience and refusal to panic under pressure proved to be decisive in Sunday's 13-10 victory against the Tennessee Titans. Garcia connected with Joey Galloway for a 69-yard touchdown in the third quarter, then found Ike Hilliard for two key completions on the Bucs' game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.

The Titans had tied the game at 10 on LenDale White's 2-yard run with 1:17 left, and after a touchback, the Bucs began at their own 20. Garcia had two incompletions, one intended for Hilliard and one for Galloway, but was intent on remaining careful. On third down, Garcia threw a 28-yard completion up the middle to Hilliard, who ran out of bounds at the Bucs' 48-yard line.

'The main thing for me was not to force a throw or make a poor decision and give them a chance to create a turnover,' Garcia said. 'The two incompletions obviously didn't take any time off the clock so that was a critical third down because we would have punted and given them time to work with the clock. So I really tried to just stay within myself, understand what we have going on as an offense, understand what they were going to be doing defensively and just try to allow guys to work and give them an opportunity to make plays and that's what happened.'

Earnest Graham then caught a pass for 3 yards, and on second down, Galloway caught a 14-yard pass to the Titans' 35 before the Bucs called a timeout with 22 seconds left. On second down, Garcia went back to Hilliard for a 10-yard gain, and the veteran receiver ran out of bounds with 16 seconds remaining.

'We drew up the play for that coverage and the linebackers got deep enough that Jeff had time to throw back to me on the third read,' Hilliard said. 'I found a soft spot between receiver Michael Clayton and B.J. Askew. Initially I knew I was going to get out of bounds but I didn't want to force the issue and lose the first down.'

The reception led to Matt Bryant's game-winning 43-yard field goal with 11 seconds to play. Garcia and Galloway put the Bucs ahead late in the third quarter with a deep pass up the middle. Galloway easily beat cornerback Nick Harper, who never saw the ball, and got free safety Calvin Lowry to turn his hips enough to put him out of position as Galloway caught the pass and ran untouched to the end zone. The result was a 10-3 Bucs lead with 2:29 left in the third quarter.

Galloway's 97 receiving yards marked his highest since Week 2 against New Orleans, when he had four catches for 135 yards and two touchdowns. 'It's tough because we would like to hit more of those but they're not always there,' Galloway said. 'We get three or four of those calls in each game and all kinds of coverage gets in the way. Today we were able to get one and it turned out to be a big score for us.'
