Bucs' Smith Enjoys Breakout Game
The Tampa Tribune, published 25 September 2006

Carolina WR Steve Smith had his 2006 coming out party Sunday. The other Smith in the game, Bucs TE Alex Smith, had his own regular-season coming-out party. Smith led the Bucs with four receptions for 72 yards, which included a 22-yard reception on a flea flicker early in the second quarter. QB Chris Simms handed off to RB Cadillac Williams on first-and-10 from the Bucs' 41-yard line. Williams then pitched the ball back to Simms, who hit Smith for 22 yards.

The play was part of the Bucs' first scoring drive and led to the team's first touchdown of the season. "It was something we put in this week," Smith said. "We know their safeties like to bite hard on the run, so we thought we'd take advantage of that and go with the flea flicker. Originally, it was supposed to go to Mike Clayton, but the safeties didn't play hard that time and I was left wide open."

Smith hauled in another big reception for 27 yards to help set up the Bucs' go-ahead field goal with a little more than five minutes remaining in the game. It was his third catch of the game that went for a first down. "It's something I've been waiting for and fortunately my number was called this week," Smith said. "It still doesn't mean too much when we don't win the game, so it's kind of hard to smile about, the performance I had."

Critical call
The Bucs were penalized six times for 56 yards, but the one that hurt the most was FS Will Allen's 15-yard taunting penalty. Allen was penalized for getting in Steve Smith's face after QB Jake Delhomme threw an incomplete pass Smith's way on third down. The penalty gave the Panthers new life and instead of punting from their own 23-yard line, they ended the series punting from the 49. What would have been better field position for Tampa Bay's offense instead became a three-and-out beginning at their own 7. The Panthers kicked a 50-yard field goal on the next series to take a 20-7 halftime lead.

Killer Kasay
Last week the Bucs witnessed the worst of field goal kicking when Atlanta's Michael Koenen missed two attempts and had two others blocked. On Sunday, the Bucs got a clinic in kicking. Carolina's John Kasay contributed 12 points on four field goals, including one from 51 yards and another from 50. He nailed the game-winner from 46 yards with 2 seconds remaining. "There was no doubt about any of [his kicks]," Gruden said. "That was a precision performance. I don't like that guy. I don't like John Kasay. He's killed me before and he got me today."

Walking wounded
TE/LS Dave Moore has quite the scar following a rib injury that took a turn for the worst. Moore has been out since the first game of the season against Baltimore when he fractured a rib in the third quarter. The 15-year veteran was having trouble breathing and coughing up blood while trainers tended to him on the sideline, but soon learned it was something more than having the wind knocked out. Moore was transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital where doctors discovered the broken rib had punctured his left lung. He stayed in the hospital for four days recuperating. "They held up the X-ray of my broken rib and couldn't see my lung," Moore said. "That's when I knew it was bad."

Moore, who had to have a chest tube inserted to inflate his lung, said he expects to be back after the bye week. G Davin Joseph also hopes to return after the bye week. The rookie guard watched Sunday's game from the press box. After the game, as he left, Joseph walked with a noticeable limp, the result of the knee injury he sustained in the first week of the season.

Injury report
DT Anthony McFarland missed a couple of snaps after suffering a rib contusion in the second quarter, but later returned to the game. The Bucs were forced to reshuffle their starting defensive lineup because of injuries to CB Brian Kelly (turf toe) and LB Ryan Nece (knee bruise). CB Juran Bolden started in Kelly's place and CB Torrie Cox replaced Bolden at nickelback.

Starting MLB Shelton Quarles moved over to Nece's strongside spot and Barrett Ruud got his second start of the season at middle linebacker. It was the first time since the 2001 season that Quarles started at strongside linebacker.

Pooch punt
The Bucs were ready for a particular special teams gambit pulled by the Panthers in the first quarter. Ostensibly, Carolina lined up to try a 55-yard field goal attempt. However, the ball was snapped directly to kicker John Kasay, who booted a short pooch punt down the middle of the field. The Bucs had CB Ronde Barber deep for just such a contingency, and Barber fielded the punt and returned it eight yards to the Bucs’ 20. That stood as the second punt return in Barber’s career. At Chicago on November 29, 1989, Barber picked up a deflected punt and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown.

Buc notes
Tampa Bay is 0-2 at home for the first time since the 2004 season, when they started 0-4 and didn't win their first home game until a 19-7 victory against Chicago on Oct. 24.
The Bucs don't play at home again until Oct. 15 against the Cincinnati Bengals, who are 3-0.
DE Simeon Rice picked up his 120th career sack and with two forced fumbles, brought that career total to 36.
WR Joey Galloway recorded the Bucs’ first touchdown of 2006 on an eight-yard catch in the second quarter. It was the 65th touchdown of Galloway’s career, which began in Seattle in 1995.
